Thanks to couples like Deanna and Stephen, we’ve had good reason to visit the South Bay more frequently this year (and indulge in its many delicious restaurants as a result!). Deanna and Stephen are getting married at the historic Rengstorff House next month and invited us to tour the grounds as well as their new home in San Mateo for their engagement session.
Our journey from the East Bay began smoothly (we even got to see where Google lives!)…until we suddenly found ourselves stuck in traffic for the Shoreline Amphitheater, a 22,500-seat concert venue that was hosting a huge music festival that day. Unfortunately for us, there was only one way to the Rengstorff, but with patience and some artful weaving we were waved through the gates of what turned out to be a sprawling park, complete with a golf course and trails.
At the end of the wending park road sits the 19th-century Victorian Italianate house adjacent to Shoreline Lake, which was thronged with geese and folks enjoying the gorgeous day. We explored the house’s grounds first and then made our way to the waterfront park for a picnic (check out their cute wire basket!). After dodging geese galore, we stopped by Deanna and Stephen’s Bay Meadows home, where they knocked back a few refreshments before monopolizing one of the neighborhood playground sets. Since Stephen is considerably larger than the average child, we were all amazed that he fit on the slide and made an animated gif to mark the occasion.
Our time with them ended, ironically, at the welcome center, which boasts a spectacular living wall (or vertical garden). We spotted strawberries, a variety of herbs, and other edibles, as well as flora of all types. This made us hungry, of course, so we parted ways to address our grumbling bellies. (We ended up at Santa Ramen in San Mateo, in case you’re curious.) Here are some of our favorite shots from our time together.
