Our first shoot of 2012 was of the talented troupe of capoeiristas from Capoeira Mestre Bimba—Oakland. This two-part project began at Oakland’s Port View Park, where Jadson, Alice, Helio, and Rachel demonstrated tremendous skill, balance, and power as they flipped, kicked, and played on the rugged pier that looked across the bay to San Francisco. The no-nonsense fishermen and tangle of crabtrap rope posed a few challenges, but it was hard to tear ourselves away even after the sun set and the brisk winds picked up.
A few weeks later, we wrapped up the shoot at their Lake Merritt studio (Addis Habana) and in front of the historic Fox Theater. Their cat-like grace and gravity-defying acrobatics were inspiring to behold and delayed many passersby. We certainly thought about putting down our cameras to try a handplant or two!
